Our Learning at Home is changing as we have now completed all the sounds for Junior Infants. Please now use the sound books you have created with your child for going over or revising all the sounds on a regular basis.
We suggest you buy a new copy for the new learning. Each week we will send home lists of words that use the sounds learned in Jolly Phonics. There are a number of activities you can complete with your child. Please see the list below and complete those your child is able for. We will review how you and your child are getting on at our upcoming parent teacher meetings.
Steps:
1. Do no more than one list a day (List 1 on Monday, List 2 on Tuesday and so on).
2. Ask your child to read the first word in the list. If they need help remind them to sound out each sound (s – a – t) and then try and blend them together into a word (ssssaaattt, sat). If they are still having trouble, you sound the word out (s – a – t) and ask them what word they hear.
3. When we know the word, think of a sentence to put it into together ‘The cat sat on the mat.’
4. Now open the copy and say the word for your child, asking them to write it down without looking. If they are finding it hard to write the whole world let them focus on the first sound. Let them check if they got it right. We can write it again if we made a mistake.
5. Now move onto the second word on the list following the above steps for each word.
REMEMBER: All children learn at different speeds so there is no pressure to do every word on the list each day. You might only do 1 or 2 words but do follow all 5 steps above for each word. If you are still working after 20 minutes please stop.
